How To Be a Tourist in Your Own City
Rediscover the Magic Right Outside Your Front Door
We all dream of visiting far-off destinations—ancient ruins, colorful street markets, breathtaking coastlines—but what if some of the most rewarding adventures are right outside your front door?
One of the best travel hacks I've learned over the years is that you don't have to go far to feel far away. Being a tourist in your own city—or your own small town—is more than a budget-friendly weekend activity; it's a mindset shift that turns the familiar into something fresh. You don’t need to live in a major city like San Francisco to experience this. Whether you’re in a big city, a small town, or somewhere in between, rediscovering a favorite neighborhood or stumbling upon a hidden gem you never knew existed can be just as meaningful (and fun!) as a bigger getaway.
Below are four reasons to play tourist at home and how to get started.
1. You’ll See Your City with New Eyes 👀
When you live somewhere, it's easy to fall into routines—same coffee shop, same walking route, same handful of favorite restaurants. However, stepping into a tourist's mindset encourages curiosity. Try walking around with no destination, asking local store owners for recommendations, or signing up for a guided tour (I love Get Your Guide and Airbnb Experiences). You might discover the story behind a building you've passed a hundred times or find a tucked-away bookstore that feels like a portal to another world.

2. It’s Low Stress, High Reward 🏆
No packing. There is no jet lag. There are no long security lines. Exploring your hometown comes with all the fun of travel—new experiences, spontaneous detours, delicious bites—without the usual logistical headaches. It’s the perfect way to satisfy your wanderlust in between bigger trips.

3. You’ll Support Local Businesses 🥰
That quirky art gallery you’ve always meant to check out? The mom-and-pop ramen shop with the handwritten sign? Playing tourist gives you a reason to explore finally—and support—the businesses that make your city unique. Every cappuccino, museum visit, and walking tour helps sustain the culture and character of your community.

4. You’ll Make New Memories Close to Home 🤗
Revisiting places you already love can deepen your connection to them. Bring a friend, partner, or your kids along for the ride and experience your hometown through someone else's eyes. You might even start new traditions—like an annual "local getaway day"—that become as cherished as your international adventures.

How to Get Started 🔥
Pick a neighborhood you rarely visit and spend the afternoon exploring it on foot
Take a walking or food tour—yes, even if you think you know everything already!
Check out tour options on Get Your Guide, Airbnb Experiences or just Google local food and walking tours in your city.
Follow local food & travel influencers/bloggers in your city for fresh ideas
For example, here are two of my favorite sources in San Francisco:
Tablehopper by Marcia Gagliardi. My go-to SF foodie guide for the past 19 years! Subscribe to her weekly newsletter and follow her on IG here.
SF Bucketlist. Showcases local events and experiences to check out - follow here on IG.
Visit museums, gardens, or historical sites you’ve never stepped inside!
Say yes to something touristy: a cable car ride, boat tour, or tourist bus. It might surprise you!
Being a tourist in your city reminds you that wonder isn’t reserved for vacation. It’s everywhere—if you’re open to it. So grab your camera, lace up your walking shoes, and explore your hometown with fresh eyes. Who knows? Your next favorite adventure might be just a few blocks away!

Couldn't agree more! I find intentionally making plans to check out local restaurants and nearby small towns a great way to "travel" without really going far.
