I figured we were on the same page! Also, I second your endorsement of freecampsites.net. While the website UI is a little antiquated, that site was invaluable during COVID when I was traveling between work assignments and hotels/commercial campgrounds weren’t open. Found some hidden gems out there primarily on public land. One more reason people who love travel need to advocate keeping our federal and state properties open to everyone!
